The
Beltsville Young at Heart Club is a senior citizen
organization whose purpose is to meet the needs of older adults
for friendship, growth, and usefulness to their communities; to
help older adults remain self-sufficient and alert members of
the community, and to keep older adults well informed on matters
of personal and community welfare.
We are open to
anyone over 55 years of age in any Maryland county, although we
attract most of our members from this area. After a person has
attended 3 meetings, they are accepted as a member. Dues are
$5.00 a year. You must attend at least 8 meetings a year to be
considered active. We meet presently at the Beltsville
Recreational Center on Sellman Road in the Connie Romanello room
on the first and third Thursday of each month at noon, (although
to get a good parking space, come earlier). Once you reach 80
years old and have been active 5 years, you can become a
lifetime member, paying no annual dues. We now have 40 lifetime
members. Our oldest members are now in their 90”s.
We were
chartered in February of 1966. We have 168 members in our
roster with 90-110 active members, and about 80 at each meeting.
We have 8 elected officers and about 14 appointed officers. Our
first meeting of the month covers any business to be handled by
the membership, while the second meeting may have a little
business to be handled, but then contains a speaker or musical
entertainment. We socialize at both meetings and of course have
some refreshments.
We support any
member that may need a card or visit, and memorialize any member
who has died.
We have many
trips that member and friends can go on. Some are day trips and
some 5-10 day trips. You do not have to be a member to travel
with us.
We are also
involved in our community. We are in attendance at the annual
Beltsville Craft Shows and Beltsville Days manning bake table
and kitchen meals among other duties. We help the Beltsville
Ladies Club with baskets and donations. We have beautified the
areas around the Beltsville Community Center and the nature
trail and park that surround it with plants. We plant bulbs each
fall along the path through the woods.
We also
contribute to the Laurel Regional Hospital and their annual
Christmas tree lighting. Many of our members are also volunteers
at the hospital. We always participate with the Laurel Main
Street Festival, and are working with other local clubs to
create the new Atlas Center, which is the new senior Center to
serve the tri-county area. We also have about 12
other annual donations that we make to show our support for area
charities. |
